FTC Disclosures Made Simple Icons For Bloggers

Have you been paying any attention to recent announcement of FTC’s new blogger disclosure rules that took effect recently on December 1, 2009? Are you in compliance with the new FTC regulations?

This is what they basically say:

“If you get something and decide to write about it, you have to disclose that it was given to you and/or whether you were paid for the review.”

Personally, I think the new FTC regulations should do more good than harm and it shouldn’t bother you too much if you are a blogger or marketer with honest intentions. So, just be transparent with what you do and you’ll be fine.

Do you want to know more? A guide to FTC regulations can be found here.

If you are scratching your head over how to go about disclosing your relationships with the companies and products you review and write about in your blog post, then you may want to make use of this amusing set of icons, designed by illustrator Jeannine Schafer, trying to appease the FTC and their new blogging FTC regulations….just kidding!

I’m not a big fan of over regulating businesses or activities. In principle this seems OK as it is just a question of transparency and ethical behavior. Is it really needed? Does William Shatner have to issue a disclaimer whenever he does a Priceline.com commercial or do you just assume he’s being paid? Just sayin’.
